Eguavoen backs Umar and Awoniyi to score goals for the Super Eagles

Coach Austin Eguavoen has defended Sadiq Umar and Taiwo Awoniyi against recent criticism from the media and backed them to score goals.

Awoniyi and Umar are saddled with the responsibility to getting the goals for the Super Eagles at the African Cup of Nations, after Odion Ighalo and Victor Osimhen pulled out.

However, the duo haven’t been able to hit the ground running in Cameroon and fans have expressed worry that, their lack of killer instinct in front of goal could cost the team.

At the moment Awoniyi and Umar have just a goal in two games between them at the tournament, but Eguaveon is backing the players to score important goals for the team.

They (Osimhen and Ighalo) are two different players who can actually score two goals out of three chances. Awoniyi and Sadiq are two different type of players too,” Eguavoen after the team’s training session .

“That’s not to say they can’t score goals. Awoniyi has been scoring goals in the German league and Sadiq as well

“However Ighalo and Osimhen are two different players from what we have now, that’s why we are trying to play to our strength.”

The Super Eagles will face the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in their final group game at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua and Umar is expected to start the game.
