Eguma goes against declaring Plateau United NPFL Champions

Rivers United’s Manager Stanley Eguma is not in support of the idea of awarding the league title to Plateau United, claiming the season is not yet over.

United have really given good of account of themselves this season pushing Plateau for the title.

The Pride of Rivers did well to pick 45 points from 25 matches before the league was suspended on March 18 and are just four points off the pace.

While some have called on the league body to cancel the season, some others suggested that Abdu Maikaba’s men should be named the champions.

But, Eguma who led Rivers United (then Dolphins) to their third league title in 2011, believes it will be too soon to make such decision as his team are still in the title race.

“It will be too early to start rushing and say the trophy should be handed to Plateau United because the league is not over,”

“I will not want them to go ahead and hand over the trophy to Plateau United, but if the Nigeria Football Federation, in conjunction with the LMC, decide to do that, no problem.”

“I think we should allow this problem (coronavirus) to go before we move on. If they (Plateau) are named champions and the problem is still there, it does not make it right. The most important thing is to allow this transition period to pass by.”
