Former Super Eagles player Friday Ekpo has urged soccer lovers in the country to get behind coach of the Eagles, Gernot Rohr, as the coach tries to build a good squad for the forthcoming AFCON 2019 to be staged in Egypt.
Ekpo said in a chat with www.brila.net that achieving qualification to the tournament is a great one, having missed out on the last two editions as a country, while calling for fresh legs to be invited to the team to prove themselves.
“We should stop judging the team for now and just get behind them. The task is to prepare adequately for the Nations cup so we need to be patient with the gaffer, Rohr, look at how he is preparing the team and give him full support so that the team can be okay”
“The team is okay, but I will advise he gets the best players and injects fresh blood in the team, both home and abroad so that we have a very balanced national team”
The beauty of everything is that if any player gets an injury, it would not be difficult to find a good and adequate replacement in the team,” Ekpo advised.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles qualified for the 2019 AFCON after playing a 1-1 draw away to South Africa last year with a game to spare just same way they qualified for the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia.
Criticism was leveled against Rohr following the Super Eagles disappointing exit from the group stage at the World Cup but the team redeemed the Nations pride with an AFCON ticket.
The German manager who has managed several Africa sides such as Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso is looking forward to a fruitful 2019 with the Super Eagles.
