Enyimba back in title race after derby win over Rangers

Enyimba defeated Rangers International 2-1 in their rescheduled Nigeria professional football league (NPFL) matchday 20 fixture on Thursday.

Victor Mbaoma and Cyril Olisema were on target for the People’s Elephants, but while Israel Abia netted Rangers consolation goal.

Mbaoma gave Enyimba a perfect start to the game when tap home beautiful pass from Super Eagles winger Anayo Iwuala in the 3rd minute.

Enyimba’s lead last for three minutes, and as Israel Abia restored parity for the visitors. Abia capitalised on error from John Noble to fire into the net.

After a patient build up, Enyimba fired through Dare Olatunji. Rangers’ Seidu Mutawakilu parried on to the cross bar and to safety. From the corner, Mbaoma volleyed over.

Enyimba regained their lead on half hour mark after, Cyril Olisema beat Rangers goalkeeper from 20 yards, again Anayo Iwualaorchestrated the goal with a nice chest down.

In the 35th minute, Anayo almost made it 3-1 when he danced his way into Rangers box, but goalkeeper Mutawakilu kept out his effort.

The Flying Antelopes did improve in the second half , but it was not enough to earn them a point in Aba, as Enyimba held on to their lead.

The maximum points which saw Enyimba move up to sixth on thelog with 44 points while Rangers drops to seventh with 42 points.

Enyimba will host Nasarawa United in their next NPFL fixture Sunday, while Rangers will travel to Uyo to face Dakkada FC.
