Exclusive: Okpala Denies Interest in Rangers Vacant Coaching Job, Advises Club to Retain Ugwu

Sylvanus Okpala has denied any immediate interest in the vacant Coaching position at NPFL side Rangers FC and told brila.net that he has not been contacted for the job.

In a telephone chat on Brila FM’s Sports Machine, Okpala said “I don’t know about that. Am hearing it for the first time.”

His comments contradict reports credited to club sources that the former Rangers player will replace Benedict Ugwu in the dugout.

He said, “Am in Akwa (Anambra State). When the time comes we’ll see.”

On Sunday following the team’s 2-0 home defeat to Akwa Starlets, Rangers announced – over the Public Address System inside Stadium – that Coach Benedict “Surugede” Ugwu had been suspended indefinitely.

Rangers are currently 15th in the log with four points from five games in the early days of the season.

But Okpala, who also won the league as a player of Rangers, doesn’t think Ugwu deserved to be given the sack.

“I wasn’t too close to the club, so I don’t know what transpired with Ugwu,” the former Goalkeeper said.

“But I don’t think He was doing badly; If you ask my opinion I would have suggested ‘Surugede’ be given time, it is too early in the season. He has qualified the team for thee Confederation Cup Group stage as well.

“If I had the ears of the Management, I will advice them to keep ‘Surugede’. He hasn’t done badly and he was a good player in his days,” Okpala concluded.
