Following her victory in the women’s 200 meter heat at the University of New Mexico Open Classic, Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili had a successful opening to the 2023 season as she beat 21-year-old Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred, who returned in a time of 22.56secs to finish second.

The 20-year-old Commonwealth gold medalist also competed in the 60 meter preliminary round and finished third in 7.25 seconds.

 

However, Ofili improved for the event’s final and finished third in 7.21 seconds, setting a new season best. Alfred won the race with a collegiate record time of 7.00 seconds.

 

The sprinter, a Louisiana State University student, had a stellar 2022 season and was a member of Nigeria’s 4x100m women’s relay team, which won gold and set a new African best of 42.10 seconds at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
