Ferguson Advises Rangers Against Extending Balogun’s Contract

Former Rangers midfielder, Derek Ferguson has stated that it’s time for Leon Balogun to leave the club, arguing that the Nigerian defender’s physical limitations make a contract renewal too risky.

Balogun has embodied the spirit of a Rangers player, giving his all on the pitch until exhaustion.

However, Ferguson believes the veteran’s body can no longer cope with the demands of top-level football, making a new deal unwise.

The 36-year-old has just a few months left on his current contract with the Light Blues.

Although Balogun recently expressed his desire to stay beyond this season, Ferguson has warned Rangers against extending his deal.

While some believe the defender could still offer valuable experience for another season, Ferguson, has a different view.

“I think he’ll be off. He’s done terrifically well since coming back in, but he’s 36 and injury-prone,” Ferguson told Ibrox News.

“He’s a good player, but is he someone Rangers should be looking to tie down? No. He’s done well across two spells, but no, it’s time for Leon to look elsewhere.

“Rangers will need to look for a younger version of Balogun – a player with pace, power and good in the air. Leon is just too fragile.”

Despite battling injuries, Balogun has featured more frequently this season than the last, proving he can still contribute at a high level.

However, the numbers paint a concerning picture, of his 12 starts this season, he has only managed to complete four.

Balogun originally joined Rangers in 2020, winning the Scottish Premiership in his debut season under Steven Gerrard.

He left in 2022 but returned for a second spell in 2023, signing a one-year deal last summer.

Whether he stays or moves on, his time at Ibrox has been marked by dedication, resilience, and silverware.
