Flying Eagles captain, Daniel Bameyi has reaffirmed the team’s ambition to secure another win when they face Morocco in their second Group B fixture at the ongoing 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Nigeria began their campaign on a positive note, edging Tunisia 1-0 at the Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.

Akwa United midfielder Auwal Ibrahim’s composed first-half finish earned the win. The win places Nigeria joint-top of Group B alongside Morocco, which defeated Kenya 3-2 in its opening match.

With momentum on their side, Aliyu Zubairu’s boys are preparing for a crucial showdown against Morocco at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the clash, captain Daniel Bameyi expressed the squad’s determination to maintain their winning start.

“It’s on to the next game. We hope to win and go top of our group on our way to qualifying for the World Cup and winning the tournament,” the Bayelsa United defender said confidently.

Flying Eagles are chasing a record-extending eighth continental title but have made it clear that their primary goal is to finish among the top four and secure a spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.

Despite keeping a clean sheet against Tunisia, the Nigerian side showed vulnerabilities, particularly during quick transitional moments after losing the ball in midfield.

Morocco, on the other hand, showed their attacking intent in their match against Kenya, often punishing turnovers with swift counter-attacks led by Yassir Zabiri and Reda Laalaoui.

To overcome Morocco, the Flying Eagles will need sharper defensive coordination and improved positional discipline, especially when tracking runners between the lines.

Sunday’s match will be a decisive test of the team’s tactical maturity and ambition. A win could put Nigeria in a commanding position in Group B and one step closer to their World Cup qualification goal.
