Former Napoli coach, Andrea Agostinelli has called on Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to step up his performance levels after the midfielder delivered an underwhelming display during Lazio’s 1-1 draw with AS Roma in Sunday’s Rome derby.
Dele-Bashiru, 24, was handed a starting role in one of Serie A’s most intense rivalries but failed to make his presence felt before being substituted in the 79th minute for Reda Belahyane.
Despite Lazio’s spirited efforts, the midfielder struggled to influence proceedings in the final third.
Statistically, the Super Eagles star registered no shots on target, created no key chances, and completed just 71% of his passes.
While he contributed physically, particularly in defensive phases, his lack of attacking thrust raised concerns.
Speaking to Radiosei.it, Agostinelli didn’t hold back in his assessment of Dele-Bashiru’s performance, questioning the midfielder’s readiness for a consistent starting role at Lazio.
“Dele-Bashiru? He still needs to improve,” the former manager said. “Yesterday he had very little impact, he helped physically but he is far from a player who can be a starter.
“He didn’t do badly, but I expect more. Can he give it? We’ll have to figure it out. I don’t see him starting on Thursday.”
With Lazio preparing to face Norwegian side Bodo Glimt in the Europa League later this week, Agostinelli’s comments could influence speculation about potential changes in Marco Baroni’s midfield selection.
Dele-Bashiru, who arrived in the summer from Hatayspor, has shown flashes of promise in Europe, scoring two goals and providing two assists in eight Europa League appearances.
However, his domestic form has been less convincing, and Sunday’s performance did little to strengthen his case for a regular starting spot.
As Lazio continues their push for European qualification and continental success, the spotlight will remain on Dele-Bashiru to prove he can consistently deliver at the top level.
