France 8-0 Nigeria: Dennerby’s Falcons Suffer Record-equaling defeats

France bashed Nigeria 8-0 in an international friendly match played on Friday at the MMArena, equaling the Falcons heaviest defeats suffered in international football since 1995.

Les Bleues controlled the game from the get go and made their superior status in game show as early as minute 20 when Eugenie Le Sommer struck.

There was no stopping the Europeans after that as Valerie Gauvin followed up with the second seventeen minutes later – her first of three on the night.

On the stroke of half-time, Gaetane Thiney made it 3-0.

Goals on the hour mark by Aminata Diallo, Guavin (70′, 78′), an own goal by Faith Ikidi in minute 85′ and one on the death by Marie-Charlotte (90+3′) wrapped up the hammering.

The result equalled those inflicted by Norway (8-0) in 1995 and Germany (8-0) in 2010.

It was also Thomas Dennerby’s heaviest defeat since taking charge of the Falcons.

The Falcons will return in June when they will hope to commence their title defence of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

Nigeria was drawn bye in the first round of the qualifiers, but will face the winner between Burkina Faso and Gambia in the second round.
