Gasperini unimpressed with Atalanta’s defending against Osimhen

Gian Piero Gasperini believes Atalanta paid the price for not defending better against Napoli’s attack led by Victor Osimhen.

The Italian boss watched his side go down 2-1 to Napoli at home, but Gasperini insists they didn’t deserve to lose.

Atalanta had only one Serie A defeat all season before this, and had taken the lead through an Ademola Lookman penalty.

However, Victor Osimhen turned it around with a goal and then an assist for the Eljif Elmas’ winner, while the crossbar and Alex Meret denied a potential equalizer.

Osimhen was left alone to head in a short corner from the back post, before bullying Dameral to set up Elmas who fired home from inside the box.

Gasperini is disappointed with how his team defended against the Nigerian Forward.

“We took the lead on a penalty, but had already created chances with Hojlund, could pass it around quickly and until then Napoli hadn’t threatened us.

“It is a pity to concede four minutes later on a corner, when we were a bit slow to react. Napoli have quality and are very clinical, as we saw with the second goal too,” He said.

Following the defeat, Atalanta slipped from second to third and could slip further should Roma beat Lazio later today.
