Gbolahan Salami denies beating up Match Referee in Finland

Gbolahan Salami has rubbished reports he was handed a lengthy ban for attacking a center referee during a league match with his club KuPS.

Salami told brila.net that there’s been a campaign of calumny against him for years, by the Nigerian sports media and this was just another attempt to taint his name.

The striker, who is based in Finland, explained that he was caught in the middle of an unfortunate situation during a game and was shown a red card in a classic case of mistaken identity.

He said he had stepped in to appeal for a teammate who would have been sent off, but the Referee felt a shove and assumed it had been him who pushed.

The 26-year-old was given his marching orders in the circumstance, but after a review of the incident, he said his club have now appealed the sending off and he’s due to return to action for Kuopion Palloseura.
