Golden Boot vs NPFL title: Rivers United Star takes His Pick

Rivers United striker Chijioke Akuneto says he’s not thinking about personal accolades, but rather wants to help the team achieve the objective of winning the NPFL title this season.

Akuneto is the league leading top scorer with 16 goals, 5 assists and he’s on the verge of guiding Rivers United to their first major title.

“The aim is to end the season as champions and we believe its achievable with more hard work. I will like to win both the title and goal scorer award, but lifting the NPFL title with Rivers United is my ultimate target,” Akuneto said.

“I’m not bothered about that at all, it will even help to ginger me and make me concentrate on doing more better, I’d like to win the award as top scorer.”

“The golden boot target won’t make me to be too selfish, I will support my team mate in better scoring position than chasing personal glory, I’ve been providing assists for my teammates and I will still do more.”

With five games left to play, Rivers United tops the table with 70 points, 10 more than second placed Plateau United.

“Its been an eventful season for me and Rivers United. I’m excited about how the season is going, we’ve been playing good football and improving by each game,” He said.

All eyes will be on Akuneto again when the Pride of Rivers travel take on Enugu Rangers on Sunday.

A win for the Stanley Eguma-tutored side will take them a step further to the title.
