Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have booked their spot at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a dramatic penalty shootout win over defending champions Senegal, with goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerging as the undisputed hero.

Following a grueling 120 minutes of goalless football in the quarterfinals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Harcourt stepped up in the shootout to deliver two vital saves.

The Nigerian keeper also watched as a third Senegalese effort rattled the crossbar, securing a 3-1 win from the spot.

Nigeria were flawless from 12 yards, converting all their penalties through Emmanuel Chukwu, Israel Ayuma, and substitute Precious Benjamin.

The result means the Flying Eagles not only advance to the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but also clinch one of Africa’s four slots at U-20 World Cup, the 14th appearance in the country’s history and their third consecutive qualification.

The Flying Eagles will face the winner of the South Africa vs. DR Congo quarterfinal in the semifinals as they look to complete their mission in Egypt.
