Samuel Chukwueze will miss out on a place in both the Champions League or Europa League next season after Villarreal lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad in Sunday’s La Liga game.
Going into the game, Villarreal needed a win to keep themselves in the race for any of the top European competitions, however Chukwueze and his teammates fell short.
With the defeat, the Yellow Submarines’ only hope of playing in Europe next season is the Europa Conference League.
Chukwueze started the game, but, could do little or nothing to save the team from defeat.
The Nigerian winger was shadow of himself and Unai Emery took him off with 15 minutes left on the clock and was replaced by Paco Alcacer.
Villarreal took the lead in the 43rd minute through Francis Coquelin before Alexander Isak leveled parity in the 54th minute.
Martin Zubimendi scored the winner for the visitors in the 73rd minute to knock Villarreal out of the Champions League and Europa League race.
The defeat means Villarreal sit seventh on 56 points while Real Sociedad are sixth on 62 points.
