How Rangers beat Abia Warriors in thrilling derby game in Nnewi

Rangers came from behind to beat Abia Warriors in one of the week 12 encounters of 2021-2022 Nigeria Professional Football League.

The Flying Antelopes hosted Abia Warriors at their adopted home ground of F.C Ifeanyiubah Stadium in Nnewi on Sunday.

After a goalless first half, Abia Warriors took a surprising lead two minutes after the restart, when Valentine Odoh, fired past a stranded Seidu Mutawakilu.

Rangers thought they had leveled the game five minutes, but Ifeanyi Nweke’s bullet header from a Samuel Pam’s corner-kick crash against the upright.

The coach Abdul Maikaba’s finally secured the leveler in the 64th minute after after Abia Warriors defender brought down Elijah Ani inside the box and referee Zakari Sani wasted no time in pointing to the spot.

Christian Nnaji stepped forward and made no mistake from the spot. It was for his third goal of the season.

Chidiebere Nwobodo turned the game on its head four minutes lateras he put Rangers in front with a looping header.

Abia Warriors defender failed to clear Samuel Pam’s corner kick and Nwobodo was there to slam home the ball for a Rangers winner.

More efforts by both sides to score more goals failed to materialize as a combination of good goalkeeping and impatience in front of goal by the forward liners of both sides ensured that no other goal was recorded.

With the win, Rangers have now climbed to the 4th place with 20 points from twelve matches, while Abia Warriors remain 15th with 13 from same number of games.
