How Top Coaches were shortlisted for Super Eagles job – NFF

Member of NFF Technical and Development Committee, Paul Bassey has opened up the process of picking recommended candidates for the Super Eagles job.

The NFF is currently shopping for a coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the coming African Cup of Nations.

Former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, Lauren Blanc, Jose Peseiro, Philip Cocu and Anthony Conceicao have all been linked with the position, which was vacated by Austin Eguavoen after the failure to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup.

In a exclusive interview with www.brila.net, Paul Bassey confirmed that recommendations have been sent to the executive arm of the NFF and also revealed a crucial factor that’ll be considered, before the final decision.

He said : “After the NFF met with the Minister . There was a bid to move forward. A lot of people have applied for Super Eagles job, even before the Nations Cup, so we went back to those files and brought out those names.”

“For us it was not just a matter of recommending coaches, But the challenge is this, do we want to Dutch coach, an English coach or a South American coach.”

“What is the philosophy and if you have a pool of Super Eagles players which 90% are based in England, then it is better to go for an English coach who will better harmonize them, although some people said any coach could also fit in, so unanimously agreed and presented a name to the executives who will make a final decision soon.” He told brila.net.
