Enyimba suffered their biggest defeat in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup after going down 3-0 to Algerian club ES Setif at the May 8, 1945, Stadium on Sunday.
Recalled the Nigerian giants won the first meeting 2-1 at home last Sunday, but Algerian got their revenge with a fantastic display.
Enyimba conceded the first goal in the 31st minute when Amir Karaoui beat goalkeeper John Noble with a shot-off an Ahmed Kendouci’s assist.
The hosts added their second on the stroke of halftime, thanks to a goal from Mohamed Amoura.
Enyimba had their first attempt on goal in the second, Austine Oladapo popped a shot from distance, but the goalkeeper pushed it away from the goal.
The hosts killed the tie with the third goal of the game through Akram Djahnit, who slotted home from the spot in the 65th minute.
It would have been worse for eight-time Nigerian champions, thanks to John Noble who saved a penalty to stop the host from scoring the fourth.
The defeat means Enyimba dropped to the second position in Group A with six points after four matches.
The game against Al Ahly Benghazi on April 21 could make or mar Enyimba’s chance of progressing to the semifinals.
In another group game, South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, defeated Al Ahli Benghazi of Libya 3-0 to replace Enyimba as the Group leader.
