Ighalo showed interest in Super Eagles return – Eguaveon

The Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Austin Eguaveon has refuted claims that Odion Ighalo was forced on Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.

Ighalo was named in Super Eagles 24-man squad for the November’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde, three years after his retirement from international football.

Prior to the release of the list, NFF Supremo, Amaju Pinnick revealed, he had discussions with the Al-Shabab of Saudi Arabia’s striker on the possibility of coming out of retirement to help the team.

However, The NFF Chief has been underfire from the media for his role in the return of the striker, and many suggested he forced Gernot Rohr to accept the move.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Eguaveon refuted all the claims and confirmed Ighalo showed interest after he was contacted.

“Ighalo was not forced or begged to come out of retirement. I am sure Ighalo showed interest having been contacted about a return to the Super Eagles, that is why his name appeared in the list of invitees.”

“You cannot force anybody to comeback to play for the national team,” Eguavoen stated.

Nigeria will take on the Liberia in Morocco, before returning to Lagos for the last Group game against Cape Verde.
