Iheanacho wins Premier League Player of the Month award

Super Eagles and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho has been named as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for March 2021.

Iheanacho, who is popularly known as ‘Seniorman’ beat Harry Kane, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard, Riyad Mahrez, Andreas Christensen, Leandro Trossard, and Illan Meslier to the award.

The 24-year-old scored five goals in three league appearances for the Foxes in the lead-up to the international break last month, including his first Premier League hat-trick against Sheffield United.

He is also the fourth Nigerian to scoop the prize, after Jay-Jay Okocha (Nov 2003), Peter Odemwingie (Sept 2010, April 2011, Nov 2012), and Odion Ighalo (Dec 2015).

The Leicester forward featured in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers against the Benin Republic in Port Novo and Lesotho in Lagos on Tuesday.

Leicester, third in the table, hosts league leaders Manchester City, who had won both the player and manager awards for the past two months through Ilkay Gundogan and Pep Guardiola, on Saturday.
