Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmi believes Odion Ighalo retired from national team duty because of long distanve flight from his base in china.
Ighalo retired from the national team duties after he helped Nigeriato a third place finishe at concluded 2019 African Cup of nations inEgypt, few hours after Captain John Mikel Obi also hanged his boots.
Ighalo’s decision to dump the national team sparked reactions from Nigerians , with many believed he left when the national team needed him most.
However Ike Shorunmi has now voiced his opions on the reasonsthe Shanghai Shenhua player quited the international stage.
“The case of Mikel was not so much of a surprise, unlike that of Ighalo, who I felt could still carry on till 2022.“
“I think the difficulty of travelling a long distance from China to Nigeria may have caused him to think about ending his national team duties.“
“He is getting older and the chances of getting injuries are higher. That can be made worse with long-distance flights from China.”
Ighalo played at Russia FIFA 2018 world cup , before finishing as the top scorer of 2019 African cup of nations in Egypt and scored the total of 12 goals for Nigeria.
