I’ll Invite Stronger Players! Salisu Yusuf reveals plan for WAFU Nations Cup

CHAN Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf says he will make changes to the team that qualified for the 2018 African Nations Championship, and introduce stronger players for the WAFU Nations Cup in Ghana.

Salisu’s team overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Benin Republic to win 2-1 on aggregate.

Goals from Rabiu Ali and Kingsley Eduwo fired Nigeria to a 2-0 lead at the Sani Abacha Stadium before Goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa saved a penalty to keep Nigeria’s hope to feature in Kenya firmly alive.

Speaking with brila.net after the match, Salisu Yusuf expressed his delight with the result and praised the opposition.

He assured more changes will be made before the team face Sierra Leone in Takoradi.

‘The future is bright. We’ll build with what we have.

‘About the WAFU Nations Cup we’ll prepare well, invite stronger players to beef up the team,’ Salisu said.

The Coach said his team had to play under extra pressure after the defeat to Benin Republic last week but accepted the challenge.

‘Losing away in the first leg meant the return leg at home would mean added pressure on the team. But we’re glad with the result.

‘We’ve trained hard and we were pushed hard by the Benin team.’

On whether his players practiced for penalties, Salisu Yusuf said he changed the routine in the last session to avoid a laid back mentality on Saturday.

‘It was the same player who scored in Cotonou and our goalkeeper studied him well to know how what to expect when he stepped forward.’

‘We trained for penalties before, but decided to go another route in our final training session so we don’t give off a different psychology before this game.’
