It’s unfair to judge Bassey with Martinez’ level — Van Der Sar

Ajax Amsterdam technical director Edwin Van Der Sar believes Calvin Bassey needs more time to develop to a proper defender at the club.

Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Van der Sar noted that it is wrong to compare Bassey to Lisandro Martínez who left the club last summer.

Ajax signed Bassey from Glasgow Rangers in a £23m deal, but hasn’t really live up to expectations.

He has been constantly criticised by the media, fans and former players of Ajax.

“Lisandro Martínez was a top defender with us last season, on the field and also in the dressing room,” Van der Sar Voetbal Zone.

“Calvin also has qualities, but will still have to improve to get to that level. That is very logical, and Martínez also had that development with us. Just think of two years ago, when Martínez spent a lot of time on the bench.

“It takes time to grow; it is not fair to judge Bassey directly on the level of Martínez.”

The 22-year-old has made 18 appearances for Ajax this term, scoring once and notching two assists.
