Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye has expressed pride in maintaining his place as Udinese’s first-choice shot-stopper, even as the club endures a rough patch in Serie A.
Okoye, who has been one of Udinese’s few bright spots since returning from injury in March, credited head coach Kosta Runjaić for the confidence shown in him.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Nigerian international reflected on his growth and experiences since making his debut in Italy’s top flight.
“I am still the same as when I made my Serie A debut against Bologna, but I have certainly learned a lot,” Okoye said.
“The coach has faith in me, and I am grateful to be able to play every week. For me, it is an honour to defend this goal.”
The 25-year-old also emphasized the importance of perseverance, urging his teammates to stay committed in order to pull the team out of their current struggles.
“To get out of this moment, we have to keep working. We are working well, as we have done all season, and we have to keep pushing and grow together,” he added.
Okoye, who has become a key figure for the Bianconeri, underlined that Udinese must stay focused if they are to achieve their top-ten ambitions.
The Italian club is currently winless in their last seven league matches, but Okoye has had a decent run individually, making 21 appearances and keeping four clean sheets so far this season.
After missing Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March, Okoye will hope that his performances at club level can earn him a recall to the Super Eagles squad, especially ahead of the Unity Cup tournament scheduled for London next month.
Since leaving Watford and signing for Udinese, Okoye has looked revitalized. His time at Sparta Rotterdam had once showcased his immense potential, and he now appears to be rediscovering that form in Italy.
Although injuries have limited his campaign, when fit, the 25-year-old has consistently proven why he remains one of Nigeria’s top goalkeeping talents.
With only a few games left in the season, Okoye will hope to end on a high helping Udinese secure valuable points and strengthening his case for a prominent role in Nigeria’s plans moving forward.
