Alex Iwobi delivered a moment of magic with a stunning assist, but it wasn’t enough as Fulham suffered a late 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.
Iwobi, who has been in fine form this season, played a crucial role in Fulham’s opener, delivering a pinpoint cross to Raul Jimenez, who expertly controlled the ball on his chest before volleying home in the 35th minute.
Despite Fulham’s promising start, Brighton responded quickly, leveling the score just six minutes later through Jan Paul van Hecke.
The game remained tightly contested, but heartbreak struck for Marco Silva’s side in stoppage time when Joao Pedro converted a late penalty, sealing a dramatic win for the hosts.
The defeat was a tough pill to swallow for Fulham, who had enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten run against Brighton before this loss.
It also dealt a blow to their European aspirations, leaving them in ninth place and five points behind their opponents, who moved up to sixth, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
Iwobi and Bassey’s Performances
Iwobi was one of Fulham’s standout performers despite the loss. He registered 58 touches, completed 31 of his 41 passes (76% accuracy), and created one key chance.
The midfielder also attempted four dribbles, successfully beating his marker twice, and had one shot blocked. He was lively throughout, lasting 89 minutes before being substituted.
Bassey, on the other hand, put in a solid defensive shift, completing the full 90 minutes.
The Nigerian center-back made two tackles, one clearance, and blocked a shot.
He was excellent in possession, boasting a 96% pass accuracy (42/45 completed passes) from 55 touches. Defensively, he won all three of his aerial duels and succeeded in four out of eight ground battles.

Despite their strong individual displays, Fulham will be frustrated with the result, knowing they came close to securing a valuable point.
With the race for European spots intensifying, the Super Eagles duo will need to step up as Marco Silva’s side looks to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
