Iwobi’s winner against Newcastle enters Premier League record books

Alex Iwobi ended his goal drought as he scored the winner for Everton against Newcastle United last night.

Iwobi struck in the 99th minute of the added time to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory for 10-man Everton who had Allan sent off in the 83rd minute for a foul on Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Nigerian international picked up a loose ball from the midfield and beats a marker, before exchanging passes with substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and then slide home a cool finish with his left foot.

It was an improbable victory sealed with a superb goal from a player who has endured torrid time this season.

The former Arsenal player has now scored a Premier League goal at Everton for the first time since 2019.

The goal also, happened to be his second goal in his last 32 Premier League appearances for Everton, also netting against Wolves in November earlier this season.

In the Premier League, the goal was the second-latest winning goal on record (since 2006/07). Timed at 98 minutes and 19 seconds, only Bruno Fernandes’ goal in a 3-2 win at Brighton in 2020 was netted later (99:45).

Next for Alex Iwobi and Everton is trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday for an FA Cup tie at Selhurst Park.

They then face a tricky encounter at West Ham after the international break, visiting the London Stadium on April 3.
