Kaizer Chief’s Daniel Akpeyi on course for First ever Career League title

Kaizer Chiefs are 90minutes away from ending a five-year trophy drought by clinching the Premier Soccer League title after Saturday’s clash away to relegation battler’s Baroka FC.

Chiefs need a win to be confirmed champions of what has been a grueling season in South Africa. It has been a rat race between Ernst Middendorp’s men and holders Mamelodi Sundowns, who themselves have a big chance of a dramatic season-ending triumph.

But victory will be significant for Chiefs as they would have edged arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the total number of titles won – with both teams tied on 12.

In the PSL era, the Glamour Boys are seeking only their 5th crown; they last won in 2015.

For a number of players including Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, it’ll be their first major silverware with the club and in South Africa.

In 2015, Akpeyi joined Chippa United from Warri Wolves where he had only just concluded the NPFL season as runner up.

He had only ever won two FA Cup crowns at club level in Nigeria, but the League title remained elusive.

Unfortunately for the 34-year-old, he won’t be between the sticks on Saturday as he continues recuperating from a concussion suffered just before in the game against Bidvest Wits.

Nonetheless, winning means much for the Nigeria international as it does for his teammates and the struggle all season long couldn’t be better capped off than with a trophy parade.
