Kanu Day! American City Proclaims November 18 in Honor of Nigerian Footballer

Uchenna Kanu isn’t just a star on the pitch at the Southeastern University, she has also warmed hearts in the City and was honored last month by the Government of Lakeland City.

At the Lakeland City Commissioners meeting, Kanu was honored by Mayor Bill Mutz with an official proclamation that November 18, 2019 is Uchenna Kanu Day.

Kanu was honored for becoming college soccer’s all-time leader in career goals at a single school, as well as earning four international caps over the summer at the FIFA Women’s World Cup with Nigeria.

“This has been an incredible season for me and I really appreciate the city for honoring me,” said Kanu.

“I will be on the phone with my family later to celebrate the day and share it with them.”

The Nigerian broke the record with her 149th career goal on November 2nd in a win at USC Beaufort. Since then, she’s increased her record to 157 total goals.

“She’s embraced our community wholeheartedly and has been a tremendous representation of Lakeland,” said coach Randy Belli during the ceremony at City Hall.

“Being in the World Cup was such a promotion for our University and the community, with millions of people around the world watching, Lakeland, Florida was called out because of her using her God-given talents to represent her school and community well.”

Her extra time goal in the NAIA Women’s National Soccer Championship sent the Fire Athletics to the semi-finals, but they lost 2-1 to Keiser Seahawks on Friday.
