Khune vs Akpeyi! Super Eagles goalie clears the air on Conflict in Amakhosi

Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has addressed his alleged frosty relationship with teammate Itumeleng Khune and the battle for relevance in the club.

Akpeyi joined Amakhosi in the January transfer window of 2018/19 season after Khune suffered a long-term injury – it eventually kept the Bafana Bafana goalie out for 9 months.

Khune returned last month and strolled back into Ernst Middendorp’s starting XI, but there were concerns his Nigerian back up wasn’t pleased by the decision.

In spite, Akpeyi told Chad Klate [kickoff.com] that the suggestions were unfounded and spoke on his role as back up role.

“I’m not competing with anyone; I’m only competing with myself to be the best that I can be and to make sure that whenever I’m given an opportunity then I try to do my best and solidify my own ground,” said Akpeyi.

“Concerning Itu [Khune], I don’t know about him going out for two months or so, but I think we need him back as urgently as possible because we need the backline to be solidified.

“It doesn’t need to be on one person, so in case anything happens we can have him because we need his experience and we need his character behind as well.”
