The KNVB, Dutch football’s governing body has confirmed that center Referee Serdar Gözübüyük will not face any sanctions, despite his controversial performance in last weekend’s Eredivisie match between Feyenoord and PSV.
Referee Serdar Gözübüyük awarded a contentious penalty to Feyenoord in stoppage time, after PSV defender Mauro Júnior was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers dispatched the kick to level the game at 2-2 and earn a point for his side.
The goal took Dessers’ goal tally for the season to 20 and 100 in club Football.
However, the referee came under heavy criticism from PSV fans and the media, as footage shows Mauro Júnior turned his back, before Jens Toornstra’s shot made a slight contact with his arm.
The KNVB, in a statement, admitted the penalty shouldn’t have been given, but confirmed the referee won’t be dropped from match day duties.
“We absolutely understand the disappointment of PSV,” A spokesperson for the football association stated. “The conclusion was that the penalty kick should not have been given. But Mistakes are always made.”
“Thanks to the VAR and the referee training there are fewer and fewer, but Sunday proved that it can still happen.”
“The KNVB does not consider it necessary to impose a suspension on Gözübüyük after his mistake. The referee will be the VAR at FC Utrecht-AZ next Wednesday.”
