Qatar 2022: Japan come from behind to beat Germany in Group E opener

Japan recorded a stunning late comeback to beat former World Champions Germany in their opening World Cup game in Qatar.

The Asian giants had went behind in the first half, but recovered to shock the 2014 World Cup winner 2-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Manchester City Midfield Okay Gundogan gave the Hansi Flick’s side the lead from the penalty spot, before Japan substitute Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute.

Substitute Takuma Asano then netted the winner for the Japanese from tight angle late on to send the crowd into wild jubilation.

Germany, who finished bottom of their group in Russia in 2018, will face 2010 winners Spain on Sunday, then a final group game against Costa Rica.
