Lobi Stars edges wasteful Sunshine Stars in Makurdi

Lobi Stars defeated spirited Sunshine Stars 2-1 in one of the NPFL week 24 encounters at the Aper Aku on Sunday.

It was Sunshine Stars’ defeat under interim gaffer Kayode Emmanuel who was drafted in as late replacement for departed Gbenga Ogunbote.

The Owena Whales made a strong start to proceedings and could’ve gone ahead after 12 minutes. However, Sadeeq Yusuf fired just wide from close range with better-placed Ifegu Ojukwu waiting for a cut back pass in front of goal.

The visitors deservedly took the lead on the 14th minute when Uzochukwu Ugonna headed in Ojukwu’s free kick.

Sunshine Stars’ joy of was short lived as John Lazarus resurrected Lobi Stars back with the equalizer three minutes later.

Lazarus fires beyond the reach of Sunshine Stars goalkeeper after connecting with a pass from captain Mathias Samuel.

Lobi began to dictate the pace after their equaluser and they eventually completed the turn around minutes later, courtesy of Ossy Martins’ deft flick from goal mouth.

Sunshine stars come close in the second half to grabbing an equaliser, through Kehinde Adedipe, but his volley was kept out by the goalkeeper.

Another chance presented itself to Fuad Ekelojuoti and Waheed Adebayo, but they both failed to utilize it and Lobi held on for victory.

The result moved Lobi Stars to 8th on the log with 34 points, while Sunshine Stars are still waiting for their first victory since January.
