Maduka Okoye’s Super Eagles spot under Scrutiny

Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye pulled out of the Super Eagles friendlies against Ecuador and Mexico, according to reports.

Okoye, 22, was listed among the 30 players penciled down for the game billed for the United States America on Saturday, 28 May and 2 June respectively.

While there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the Nigeria Football Federation of the Goalkeepeer’s withdrawal, Reports claim that the Young shot stopper pulled out of the games due to a shoulder injury, he has been nursing since April 8th.

He injured his shoulder while playing for Sparta Rotterdam against Ajax and club doctors have agreed, that he has to start his treatment and rehab before next season.

Okoye hasn’t played for Super Eagles since the round of 16 game against Tunisia at the African Cup of Nations.

He also pulled out of the FIFA World Cup qualification playoff against Ghana.

Meanwhile, NFF sources have moved to disclaim suggestions the Goalkeeper could lose his spot in the team as he continues to stay away.

Recently, a controversial comment by NFF chiefs over the rising number of Foreign born players in the Squad sparked criticism, but equally raised concerns that some players might get the chop.

Maduka Okoye made his debut for Nigeria in an international friendly against Brazil in 2019 and has since earned 13 caps for the team.
