Makinwa happy with Katsina United’s defensive masterclass at Akwa United

Head coach of Katsina United, Henry Makinwa has expressed delight at his side’s beautiful defensive performance in their 0-0 draw against Akwa United in a match-day four NPFL fixture on Wednesday played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Makinwa’s side, shorn of many first team regulars, was on top of their game defensively to deny the Promise Keepers their first win of the season.

The visitors played on the back foot for most of the game buta 78th-minute penalty save by goalkeeper Abdullahi Boje from the boots of Akwa United captain Mfon Udoh ensured the Changi Boys left the nest of champions with a point.

However, an elated Makinwa commended his team for such a beautiful defensive display which earned them a valuable point on the road, adding that the defensive approach was not the initial game plan.

“It’s a defensive masterclass; and when you know how to do it very well, you get the point and that’s a fair result,”

“It (the defensive approach) actually was not what we planned to do initially but we had some problems so we had to change the plan to be a bit defensive and it gave us the point,”

“We have the main team back at home (due to injury) and one of the strikers that was supposed to play got ill here.”

“The goalkeeper also got ill so we had to use a 19-year old boy in the attack. We have to be grateful for the point regardless.”

“I won’t lie to you, talk about the attack, we were zero today because we couldn’t attack.”

“I think Akwa played the better football and won every sector of the game but we have a point and I am very happy with that because that is what will give you credibility at the end of the season.”

Katsina United have five points from four matches, sit 11th on the NPFL log and will entertain Sunshine Stars in their next match.
