Men’s basketball: D’tigers on the brink of elimination after narrow loss to Germany

Nigeria’s male basketball national team D’Tigers missed golden opportunity to pick up their first victory at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics games after bowing to Germany 99-92.

The African champions started the game in the front foot and established 11 points lead, but the Germans fought back to turn the game around.

Both team went into the half time break tied at 50-50 and the 3rd quarter ended 74-74 apiece after Germany’s Niels Giffey netted a 3-pointer at the buzzer .

The Germans carried their late momentum from the third quarter to the fourth and established 95-81 lead, but Miye Oni netted a 3-pointer few minutes later to reduce the gap.

Miye Oni added another 3-pointer before Danilo Barthel scored a free-throw for Germany, to take score 99-92.

An attempt by the Nigerians to draw level was halted as the Germans who held on for a valuable win to keep their hope of progressing alive.

D’tigers have now lost their two games, but all hopes of a quarterfinal ticket aren’t entirely lost for the African champions.

They must beat Italy in their third game if they are qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Nigeria’s Milwaukee Bucks star Jordan Nwora  finished with a game high 33 points, while Miye Oni finished with 15 points.
