Michy Batshuayi denies ‘laughing’ at Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois’ penalty misses

Michy Batshuayi has refuted any suggestion that he enjoyed Alvaro Morata’s penalty miss after television footage of the striker appeared to show him laughing during Chelsea’s shootout defeat.

Arsenal lifted the first trophy of the season after the Community Shield was decided on penalties.

The Belgian started the game as Antonio Conte chose to leave his £60m summer signing, Alvaro Morata, on the bench.

The match was decided on penalties after Sead Kolasinac headed in Arsenal’s equaliser after Victor Moses had put Chelsea in front in the 46th minute.

Trailing 2-1 in the subsequent shootout, Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata both missed their penalty kicks to effectively hand Arsenal victory.

“Wow lol some people really believe I laughed at my teammate and/or us losing ? Sorry to disappoint but I wasn’t,” he wrote via his twitter account

The timing of Batshuayi’s reaction enraged a number of fans on Twitter.

The specific source of Batshuayi’s amusement was unclear, but a number of Chelsea fans were left in no doubt that the striker was laughing at the two penalty misses.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte defended the decision to allow Courtois to take the club’s second penalty kick,

“Courtois is one of the best players to take a penalty,” said Conte. “If you have player who shows you during the training session that he is one of the best then you pick him to shoot the penalty.”

The Italian referred to Morata’s missed spot-kick in his post-match press conference.

But don’t forget also that Morata is a forward and he did the same.” Conte admitted Chelsea’s £60m summer signing needed to improve before the start of the season. “Morata needs to work, but it is normal,” said Conte.

“He stays with us for only one week and it is very important to find a good physical condition and to understand our idea of football.

“He needs a bit of time but that’s normal and it’s the same for [Antonio] Rudiger (who was also a substitute). It will be the same also for [Tiemoue] Bakayoko (who was not involved),” Conte added.
