Morocco not Ready to host 2019 AFCON – Sports Minister

The North African nation , along with South Africa had been considered as front runners to stage the 24 team tournament after Cameroon, who were stripped of the hosting rights last month due to poor preparations and security reasons.

“Morocco did not intend to run for the 2019 African Cup of Nations and will not do so,” Minister of Youth and Sport Rachid Talbi Alami told AFP.

Many has thought that the decision was not to bid for AFCON was because the Nation will host the 2019 African Games after original hosts Equatorial Guinea withdrew sighting financial difficulties as the reasons .

Morocco was awarded the hosting right of the 2015 AFCON but Ebola outbreak on the continent at that time led request in change of date for the tournament from the organisers, a request that led CAF to stage the competition in Equatorial Guinea instead.

The 2019 edition will be the first to feature 24 teams, rather thanusual 16, and be held in June/July, as opposed to its traditional January/February slot.

Morocco has only host the tournament once, back in 1988 .
