Nasarawa United beat Sunshine Stars to keep league title hopes alive

Nasarawa United kept their title dream alive with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Sunshine Stars of Akure on Sunday.

The Solid Miners hosted their visitors at the Lafia Township Stadium for one of the matchdays 35 of the Nigeria professional football league season.

Two goals in 16 minutes from leading scorer Silas Nwankwo gave the Bala Nikyu side dream start in the game.

Chigozie Obasi set up the striker for the goal on the 11th minute before he benefitted from Saliu Suleiman’s mistake to slot home his second five minutes later.

The brace increased his goal tally for the season to 18 and three more than Charles Atshimene of Akwa United.

Nasarawa Utd made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute. This time Silas Nwankwo turned provider as his exquisite pass founds Aliyu Abdullahi who stabs home the third with a clinical touch.

It went from bad to worse for Sunshine Stars as they were forced into making a substitution after 24 minutes. Goalkeeper Saliu Suleiman picked up an injury and was replaced by Henry Ayodele.

Nasarawa United completed a dream first half when Chigozie Obasi hit the fourth and final goal in the 40th minute. The midfielder directed home his thunderous free-kick from all of 35 yards to seal the victory.

Solid Miners are second on the Nigeria professional football league table, thanks to six points behind Akwa United with three games left.

The Solid Miners are also few points away from qualifying for the lucrative CAF Champions League next season.
