Negligence Killed Chineme Martins and the Minister of Sports Must Fish Out All Involved

Chineme Martins died on the pitch in a top flight league match in Nigeria and several hours after the footballer’s death neither the club nor the football authorities have dared to give a clear report as to what happened inside the Lafia Township Stadium on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

There are conflicting reports about the circumstances surrounding the death of Martins, a 22-year-old, who was just doing his job on the pitch.

Some reports have suggested he collapsed and others state that Martins collided with another player during the game.

But, the indisputable fact is that there was gross incompetence from the medics who administered emergency treatment treatment on him as he lay there, fighting for his life, with every breath he labored with.

First Aid treatment was administered on Martins he collapses.

However, the bulk doesn’t rest on the table of the gloveless man forcing the footballer’s jaw open as another jabs at his chest, while kneeling on the diaphragm and two others slapping the under feet of his elevated legs.

Questions must be asked of the Club chairman and Match Commissioner whose jobs it is to ensure services on match days are in the best working conditions.

Negligence killed Chineme Martins, neither the NFF nor the LMC want to admit this, but in their respective directives following this tragic incident, alluded to it. However, they both fell short of holding anybody accountable.

It now behoves on the Ministry of Sports to demand an investigation into the death of Chineme Martins and take punitive measures.

This is the appropriate course of action, should the Minister of sports Sunday Dare need reminding.

Here’s another death, here’s another family thrown into an avoidable tragedy. A loss that needs closure and one the authorities can’t afford to allow slide under the radar.
