NFF Committee recommends limit on Foreign Borns in Super Eagles

Member of Nigeria Football Federation Technical and Development Committee, Paul Bassey, said something has to change in the Super Eagles once a new coach is appointed.

Bassey made this disclosure, while speaking on the outcome of the T&D Committee meeting held on Friday in Abuja.

According to the NFF official, several recommendations have been made to the FA Executives on how to improve the Super Eagles.

He stated that one of such recommendations is the need to reduce the influx of foreign born players in the Super Eagles and give the Nigeria Professional Football League players more opportunities.

” In our last meeting someone even said we shouldn’t be begging some of these players who are born and breed abroad that claimed to be Nigerians to come and play for the Super Eagles.

“One of them even said, he couldn’t breathe. You just don’t go to London and uproot someone to come and play because he’s scoring goals and has Nigerian blood,” He told brila.net

“We felt it wasn’t proper and we believe if a player is not part of the qualifiers, and the system for sometime, then he should not play some key games that’ll lead to qualification for the World Cup or Nations Cup.

” For instance in the Nigeria league, we have 20 clubs with over 300 registered players and we couldn’t find three players who can fit into the Super Eagles and play under this condition? And then you go abroad and waste money to bring someone who won’t perform?”

“Look at Olisa Ndah, he was in the NPFL before leaving for South Africa. He was invited for the Afcon and he did well with the few minutes he had, but was dropped from the World Cup qualifiers. Is it because he’s not playing in England? This is a player that I will invite, if I were the coach. So we have made a lot of recommendations to the Executives.”

Bassey who is the Chairman of NPFL Champions, Akwa United also stated, the incoming Super Eagles coach, has options of starting a new team or retain the existing project and improve on it.

“It is like we starting from scratch or we go back to the foundation and try to rectify it. These are just two options,” He told brila.net
