NFF reveals why Ademola Lookman was left out of Super Eagles AFCON squad

Nigeria Football Federation confirmed Ademola Lookman hasn’t been cleared by FIFA to represent the Super Eagles.

Lookman was a surprise omission from Coach Austin Eguaveon’s final 28 squad for the 2022 African Cup of Nations and the decision caused mixed reactions from the media.

Reports emanated from the media that the former England international has completed his switch to the West African side , but was ignored by Coach Austin Eguavoen who replaced Gernot Rohr on interim basis.

However, NFF has now debunked the reports and revealed the reason behind his omission from the squad.

The Nigeria Football Federation has stated categorically that Ademola Lookman of Leicester City FC OF England has not yet been cleared by World Football body, FIFA to represent Nigeria at International level. The process for his switch is ongoing.

It is therefore incorrect for any medium to claim that interim Head Coach @austineguavoen is the one who axed the player from Nigeria’s final list of 28 for the Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021.

However, his name was included in the initial provisional list with the believe that the process would have been completed before the commencement of Afcon.” NFF said in a statement on Thursday.

Ademola Lookman was part of the squad that won the FIFA U20 World Cup for England, but was never called to the senior set up.

He was born in England to Nigerian parents and has played for Charlton Athletic, Everton and Fulham FC.

He is contracted to RB Leipzig of Germany, but currently on loan with Premier League side Leicester City.
