The Super Eagles were listless for the better part of 90 minutes against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Saturday’s 2019 Afcon qualifier.
Gernot Rohr’s midfield could not string passes nor create chances for the forwards and Nigeria finished without a shot on target.
What seemed obvious was that the team lacked an enforcer and a play maker.
Perhaps the void of John Mikel Obi in the midfield and the creative play of Victor Moses on the wing weren’t properly analyzed and filled, but Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr is having none of it.
The gaffer has refused suggestions the players selected weren’t capable of pulling off the job.
‘We’ll not make excuses about the players we missed.
‘We have the youngest team in Africa and this kind of result is expected. Everybody did well in the first half but you can’t win every match also.’
Nigeria lost to South Africa 2-0 in Uyo and thus drop to third spot in Group E with Libya leading after their 5-1 thumping of Seychelles.
