The Nigerian Super Eagles has crashed out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after suffering a 1-0 loss to COVID-19 ravaged Tunisian team on Sunday.
The Eguavoen-led Super Eagles side were one of the favourites to win the tournament, but have crashed out following Youssef Msakni’s strike from outside of the box early in the second half.
Nigeria’s woes were compounded when winger Alex Iwobi was shown a straight red card (after a VAR review) for a dangerous challenge on goalscorer Msakni just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.
For a side that won all three of their group games and even rested the majority of their stars for their previous match, the tournament favourites looked out of ideas in the face of some heroic defending.
Umar Sadiq had the best chance to add to the cup’s growing repertoire of late drama, only to see his shot roll across the face of the goal and wide of the far-post.
Tunisia will play Burkina Faso in Saturday’s quarter-final.
