Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 Africa U20 Nations Cup is still on course despite the Flying Eagles’ 1-1 result in the first-leg away tie against Mauritania, according to assistant Coach, Abdul Maikaba.
Ibrahim Babawo put Nigeria ahead 9 minutes inside the first half, but his goal was canceled out by Mohamed Salem three minutes later.
The result means Mauritania, who knocked out Morocco and Guinea, will come looking for a better result than they managed at home to progress, but Maikaba told Brila.net that the away goal is a huge advantage to build on.
‘ Mauritania are a good side and they showed it. But we have a huge advantage from the away goal and we would build on that.’
Nigeria is the most successful team in the tournament’s history with 7 titles, but failed to qualify for the last edition two years ago.
The best three teams from the tournament will represent Africa at the 2019 World Cup in Poland.
