Rugby is still finding its feet in Nigeria, but it’s gaining ground fast. From the Black Stallions at home to stars in top leagues abroad, Nigerian players are making their mark and inspiring the next generation.

Rugby in Nigeria

Rugby in Nigeria has been experiencing a steady resurgence, driven by increased grassroots participation and growing international ambitions. The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has worked hard to rebuild structures and secure competitive fixtures across Africa. While challenges such as limited funding and infrastructure remain, the passion for the game is clear.

The national teams – particularly the Black Stallions – are becoming more active, competing in regional qualifiers and tournaments. As more Nigerian players gain international exposure and professional experience, both homegrown and diaspora talents are helping to put Nigeria firmly on the rugby map.

Active Nigerian Rugby Players

  • Maro Itoje: Probably the most renown player of Nigerian roots and widely lauded current rugby players, Itoje was born in London to Nigerian parents and captains Saracens and England, known for his athleticism, leadership, and work off the field.
  • Declan Nwachukwu: A fast and agile winger for Nigeria’s Black Stallions, Nwachukwu has been key to their recent successes in regional tournaments.
  • Simi Pam: A prop for Bristol Bears Women, Nigerian-born Pam balances her rugby career with working as an NHS doctor and has featured in England squads.
  • Beno Obano: Bath Rugby prop Obano has earned England caps and is recognized for both his powerful scrummaging and advocacy for racial diversity in rugby.
  • Olukolade Awobowale: Co-captain of the Black Stallions, Awobowale brings leadership and versatility to Nigeria’s national side.
  • Tuoyo Egodo: Having switched from rugby league to union, Egodo now plays for Moseley RFC and adds valuable experience to Nigeria’s ranks.
  • Nick Isiekwe: Versatile lock/flanker Isiekwe has overcome health challenges to become a regular for Saracens and England.
  • Destiny Aminu: Aminu, born in Benin City, plays prop for Benetton Rugby and has represented Italy at youth level, showing Nigeria’s global rugby reach.
  • Immanuel Feyi-Waboso: Speedy winger Feyi-Waboso plays for Exeter Chiefs and is expected to have a bright future with England, all while also studying medicine.
  • Sadiq Adebiyi: Lagos-born Adebiyi is a rugby league professional who has represented Nigeria and played for London Broncos and Wakefield Trinity.
  • Niyi Adeolokun: Born in Ibadan and raised in Ireland, Adeolokun earned a cap for Ireland after standout spells with Connacht and Bristol Bears.

These players show how Nigerian talent is making an impact in rugby, both at home and overseas. As the sport continues to grow, there’s no doubt it will help to raise its profile and open doors for the next generation.
