Nigeria’s Simy Nwankwo sets new record in Italy

Striker Simone Tochukwu Nwankwo has become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the Italian Serie A after netting a brace for Crotone FC on Saturday.

Nwankwo netted twice to lead Crotone to a hard-fought 4-3 away win over Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Saturday.

The two goals take Nwankwo’s tally for the current Serie A season to 19 and only Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku have scored more.

Lisandro Magallan gave Crotone the lead in the 11th minute after he headed in Adam Ounas’ corner from the left.

Parma who have been on the back foot for the most part of the game equalized with their first real attack of the game in the 29th minute, when Hernan diverted Cornelius’s fine cross into the net.

Simy restored Crotone’s lead with three minutes left to play in the first half when he tapped home another Adam Qunas cross from the right.

After creating two goals for his team, Adam Qunas finally registered his name on the scoresheet with Crotone’s third in the first half added time.

Quick fight back in the second half saw Gervinho and Valentin Mihaila scored twice in quick succession to make it 3-3, but Simy netted from the penalty spot in the 68th minute to hand Crotone a huge win.

Nwankwo has now become Nigeria’s all-time record goalscorer in the Serie A with 29 goals. Simy with 11 games less, beats Obafemi Martins who scored 28 goals in his time at Inter Milan.
