Ahead of their crucial Group B clash against Morocco, Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu has signaled his intention to tweak the team setup, as Nigeria seeks to build momentum at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Tunisia on Thursday, thanks to Auwal Ibrahim’s first-half strike.
However, with Morocco leading the group on goal difference after edging Kenya 3–2, Zubairu is already looking to refine his side for the top-of-the-table clash at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.
Speaking ahead of the match, Zubairu suggested possible changes to his starting eleven:
“Possibly, there might be one or two changes in the lineup,” he said.
Although the Flying Eagles claimed all three points against Tunisia, their performance left room for improvement, especially in transitions and final-third efficiency.
Zubairu acknowledged this and promised a better outing.
“Definitely, there is going to be much improvement in our game tomorrow considering the fact that the last match was the first match of the tournament, and tension of unforeseen will always be there.”
He also provided a positive update on the team’s condition and morale.
“The situation in camp is positive – considering the high spirit the boys are in.They are fully ready , we just come back from the last training before the match.
“We thank God, there’s no injury in the camp.”
Zubairu took the opportunity to call for continued public support:
“Yes, we are still soliciting for prayers and support from Nigerians for all our games.”
Victory against Morocco would secure Nigeria’s place in the quarterfinals and move them a step closer to qualifying for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
Morocco, with several players based in top European academies, pose a significant threat, but Zubairu is confident that the Flying Eagles’ physicality and pressing game can unsettle the North Africans.
With seven titles to their name, Nigeria remains the most decorated team in U-20 AFCON history and will be aiming to underline their pedigree on Sunday.
