Lionel Messi surpassed Diego Maradona’s FIFA World Cup goal record for Argentina, with his strike in the round of 16 match against Australia on Saturday.

Messi surpassed Maradona with his ninth World Cup goal, and he’s just one short of equaling the all-time record held by Gabriel Batistuta.

In terms of matches at the World Cup, Messi holds the record for the most cap for Albiceleste with 23 games under his belt, but he’s still waiting for his first World Cup title.

And speaking on debate on who is the best player between Maradona and Messi, former Super Eagles midfielder Austin Okocha admits Lionel Messi is now very close to matching Maradona’s artistry.

“Diego is Diego. Diego (Maradona) for me maybe the best player that has ever played the game.

“Messi can try and match Maradona’s record but again Messi is not Messi for nothing, he’s also a world class player.

“Messi’s records are there to be seen and his influence in his national team and clubs have been immense because he has been so consistent, and today of course all hopes rests on his shoulders and he has been doing this for years.”

Messi has contributed three goals and one assist in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
