Nottingham Forest manager, Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well after undergoing a successful emergency operation for a ruptured intestine.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma following surgery, sparking concern among fans.

The 27-year-old sustained the serious injury during Forest’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City last weekend, after a heavy collision with the goalpost in the second half.

Despite the severity of the impact, Awoniyi astonishingly managed to play on for a few more minutes before being taken off and rushed to the hospital.

It was later revealed that he had suffered a ruptured intestine, a rare and potentially life-threatening injury which required immediate surgical intervention.

Thankfully, the operation was successful, and Awoniyi reportedly regained consciousness on Thursday.

Speaking ahead of Forest’s crucial league clash with West Ham United on Sunday, Nuno Espírito Santo provided a positive update on his striker’s condition.

“He went to surgery and surgery went well, thank God,” Nuno told The Sun. “He is under observation now and is recovering. We are concerned, but we are positive. It has been very difficult on us and everybody.”

Awoniyi’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the team, especially at such a vital point in the season as Forest battles to avoid relegation.

The Nigerian forward has had a stop-start campaign due to injuries, but remains a key figure in Forest’s attack when fit.

Nuno expressed hope that Awoniyi will be able to rejoin his teammates soon, even if only in a non-playing capacity, as the squad draws strength from his presence.
