Glory Ogbonna was the hero for Besiktas over the weekend, scoring a vital goal to help the team secure a 3-2 victory over Fatih Vatan Spor in the Turkish Women’s Super Lig.
The gritty win ensured Besiktas maintained their hold on third place in the standings with one match left in the season.
Early Drama as Hosts Strike First
The match kicked off in high gear with Donjeta Halilaj giving Fatih Vatan Spor a shock lead in just the 2nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to fire the hosts in front.
Besiktas, however, remained composed and found their response in the 21st minute, with Esra Manya finishing off a sweeping move to level the scores at 1-1.
Besiktas Take Control After the Break
Two minutes into the second half, Bosnian international Minela Gacarina gave the visitors the lead with a powerful effort — turning momentum in Besiktas’ favour.
Then came the moment of brilliance from Glory Ogbonna.
The Super Falcons defender, known more for her strength at the back, made an adventurous run forward and struck in the 60th minute to extend Besiktas’ advantage to 3-1 — her second goal of the season.
Late Scare But Three Points Secured
Fatih Vatan Spor weren’t ready to back down and pulled one back through Peritan Bozdag, creating a tense finish. However, Besiktas held firm in the closing minutes to secure all three points.
With this victory, Besiktas now sit on 52 points from 25 matches, trailing joint league leaders Fomget GSK and Fenerbahce by 15 points.
Although the title is mathematically out of reach, a top-three finish remains firmly in their grasp.
Glory Ogbonna’s performances continue to earn praise. The versatile defender, who joined Besiktas in 2023, has become a key figure in the team’s push for a strong finish this season.
With two league goals and several standout displays, she remains one of Nigeria’s most consistent exports in Europe.
Besiktas will conclude their 2024–25 league campaign on May 4, 2025, when they face Hakkarigucu Spor, hoping to end the season on a high and potentially secure UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification depending on final standings.
